The Work in Practice

Nonprofit  •  Youth & Family Services

When Commitment Isn’t Enough Without Shared Standards

A youth-serving nonprofit in Maryland was growing in demand but shrinking in consistency. Staff were committed; professionalism varied by person. Leaders were repeating corrections instead of building. A multi-day organizational development engagement established shared language, concrete conduct standards, and a reinforceable framework — turning individual effort into collective execution.

“When expectations are defined, practiced together, and reinforced consistently, service becomes repeatable. And leadership stops carrying the load alone.”

Building the Coalition Behind a Citywide Equity Infrastructure

A major American city committed to a 35-mile urban trail network as an equity platform. The political will existed. The operating structure did not. Over two years, primary community research, multi-agency coalition alignment, and a technical assistance framework transformed a fragmented initiative into a community-accountable implementation roadmap.

“Good intentions at the leadership level mean nothing if the operating structure below them cannot hold.”

When the Leader Is the Ceiling

A Washington-area church with 11 ministries had a clear mission and a structural problem: every decision ran through the founding pastor. Through organizational assessment, focus groups, appreciative inquiry, and a staff-led intervention workshop, ministries moved from dependency to genuine stewardship. The church now runs a thriving youth nonprofit and a weekly food drive serving 100 to 200 community members.

“The measure of this engagement was not what the church looked like when I left. It was what it was able to build after.”

Retention Is Rarely the Real Problem

A 33-person engineering department at a major energy utility attributed turnover to generational attitudes. Fourteen anonymized interviews told a different story: four specific systems failures around accountability, learning, administrative overload, and mentorship. Ownership of the diagnosis was returned to the team, who voted to prioritize team learning. A five-person internal coalition and a team charter gave them the structure to lead their own change.

“Nearly half the team disclosed, without prompting, that they were considering leaving. The engagement made it safe to say so.”
